How can you tell the age of a kitten? He is still suckling, and kneading and nuzzling like a small kitten...?
he still has baby teeth, and has not begun spraying for territory. Are there ways to tell? You can only estimate, assuming you are correct about his baby teeth all being in and still there. Here is a chart that shows what vets use to guess. http://www.ruralareavet.org/PDF/Physical_Exam-How_to_Determine_Age.pdf You might be able to add some education to your guess by looking at the proportions of the skeleton and face, the body weight and muscle development, and the texture of the coat. It takes some experience, though. Maybe show him to a person who works at a shelter - they see tons of kittens and have a better than average "feel" for age guesses. Still, until the incisors are replaced by adult teeth, it's a guess (10-14 weeks is probably the toughest time to guess). 6-8 week old kittens usually feel a bit more delicate, are under 2 pounds, and may still have a certain fluff to the coat. Usually by 10 weeks kittens weigh 2 pounds, but weight isn't all that reliable. Look closely at the incisors - the tiny teeth between the long canines. They're the first to fall out. If they are starting to be replaced by adult teeth, you'll see two sizes. The baby ones are really really small. It helps to have an adult cat to compare. zilmag | Read more Small 7-8 week old kitten had odd bugs, has a fat belly, and has short (1/2 inch long) whiskers... Worried...? I was looking to take in a new young cat, and went to see this little orange tabby I found listed. When I arrived, the living situation worried me, so I adopted the kitten to save him from poor conditions. He is maybe 7 weeks old, very small, and he was orphaned VERY young (5-6 weeks ago) when his mother was killed by a car. He is small, has a fat belly, has very short whiskers, and the woman said he had lost the hair around his eyes and that it had to grow back, so it is very short. His eyes are a bit big for his face, but I figure that is due to his lack of longer hair around the eyes. He sleeps a lot, and meows alot, but seems relatively active when he is awake. When I got him home, I had to bathe him in very warm water for a good 10 minutes, getting odd bugs off of him - he was infested with them. Black heads and brown oval backs, seemed to latch onto his skin like a tick, but didn't look like ticks. I was very thorough (poor Remi didn't like it) and got every bug and small black mass off his skin and fur all over his body, including his face, neck, and ears. I immediately wrapped him in a warm soft towel after his bath and cuddled him until he was dry. I then let him sleep in the carrier with a soft dry towel for a good hour and a half when he woke up. The woman says she dewormed him twice, which seems odd, and insists he has had his first shots. She said she bottlefed the litter until they started eating dry food properly, and had litter trained them. Then she advised me that one of the kittens had just inexplicably died a week ago. Remi seems better 24 hours later, more actively exploring the house, climbing up to my face to cuddle, nuzzle, and sleep curled up on my chest while I sit at the computer, and his playful personality is starting to show. He now follows me throughout the house, has started to clean himself a little, and has even picked a spot to hide and sleep while he is free to roam. I decided to put him in the large carrier overnight with a soft towel to sleep on because there is a larger cat in the house (declawed) that does not know what to think of little Remi yet. I am worried about the potential problems with little spunky Remi, and will have him seen by a vet soon, but was hoping to find some opinions about his situation and health in the meantime... We got him Purina kitten food, a low-sided litter box to accomodate his small size (which he is using well), and used a cat/kitten flea and tick shampoo only because of his infestation. The lil bug-eyed orange tabby needed rescued, and I couldn't just walk away... He has a pending vet appointment. once you take him to the vet eh should be fine good to know your concerned good luck hope all goes well. ●Shamar cg● | Read more Cat problem small cat attacking big cat? ok i have a problem that takes up alot of energy separating my two cats one is called suki suki is 4.5 years of age and the other cat is tommas tommas is just over a year old my eldest cat suki had an accedent a couple years ago she was struck by a car breaking her jaw and she lost one of her teeth we think this is one of the possibilitys (that she cant bite back) for her not fighting the smaller cat tommas when he attackes her i have come to understant my 1 year old cat tommas wants dommanance he has been nutered, heres the story. when we brought the cat tomma home from the kennal my mother had picked out the one who wassn't playing with any other cats the one by it's self on the side she saw this as being timid and brought him home tommas origanly tried to nuzzle suki taking no nottice and ignoring him she walked away he now will attack her at any chance i fear it will come down to one of our cats being sent away and by that only tommas will discontue the role of second cat in my family but i love them both dearly, they have separate bowls for food and drink i have recantly seen suki the cat that has eaten at her bowl for 4 years eating at tomma's bowl because she fears him he wants her bowl to show him dommance this will not stand eventualy we think suki will run away or tommas will stop 3 months after being nutered was the date tommas was suppost to stop attacking her and it hasn't stoped some say it's because hes in his teenager stage but eventual he will grow bigger that suki and i fear they will get into serous trouble can somebody give me an answer to why this is happening and how to stop this. we have tried spraying him with water when ever he attacks her it works when he is spraded but my older brother have played around with the water bottle and it was through away tommas hassnt resisted to attack so water does not work although he ran when he was spread can somebody help me? This is a small excerpt from the middle of my first chapter. Can you get the gist of what's going on? Does it make sense? Does anything sound weird or choppy? I'm looking for opinions and maybe a little constructive criticism... Please no rude comments, or anything intentionally degrading, espeically considering how little confidence I have already. Please consider that I take this seriously, and it's something I work hard at... Thanks. -------- I nodded slightly and nuzzled my face a little deep against his chest, feeling a small object pressing into the side of my cheek. My eyebrows pulled together in consideration and lifted my head slightly to inspect the object and identify the disturbance. The item was hidden beneath Riley's shirt, but the familiar shape was outlined in the thin fabric and easily distinguishable. I felt a smile tug at the corners of my lips and my hand immediately lifted to my own pendant, dangling from a copper chain that hung around my neck. For a moment, I simply toyed with the small pendant that was my constant companion, a slight smile still gracing my features. After a while of inspecting the charm, I realized Riley was watching me carefully, a knowing smile causing his eyes to lighten perceptibly. “You know, I haven't taken this off since the day you gave it to me...” I whispered, lightly. “Neither have I,” he offered as he lifted a hand to his own necklace and examined it carefully. “That was four years ago...” I mumbled as I returned my attention to the small, but significant, object. Suddenly, I was assaulted with memories of this cherished item – my acorn pendant, given to me on my fourteenth birthday, directly from Riley. Salem, New Jersey was well known for two things – it's relation to the Hebrew term meaning 'peace' and it's large Salem Oak tree. Riley was fuuccking enthralled by anything related to that tree – the way it towered above all the rest, the way the colors would change from a vibrant green to burnt amber, even the acorns that fell from that specific tree were treasured by Riley. For my birthday, Riley was dead set on getting me something significant – something that would have a distinct symbolism and meaning. In attempt at achieving this goal, he had two necklaces custom made at a local Jewelry shop, and he made damn sure that every detail was adhered to. Mine was a copper acorn coupled with golden and bronze speckles that shone under proper lighting, my initials engraved into the back along with the year. His was nearly identical, but instead of an acorn, his was an Oak leaf. I could still hear his enthusiastic tone as he presented the gifts, eagerly explaining the importance and correlation of the two pendants. /“They're suppose to symbolize strength and protection, Sammie... You'll always be my best friend.”/ I could even remember the warmth that had consumed me at his words – the way I smiled and pulled him into a tight embrace while simultaneously confessing my adoration of the meager item. It was the best gift I'd ever gotten, and even now, my most valued and worshiped belonging. “You know, back then... I wasn't sure you'd like the gift... I almost disregarded the idea completely, because I was too afraid you'd think it was stupid.” Riley's contemplative tone broke me out of my reverie and I immediately returned my attention to him. He was still fiddling with the necklace, scrutinizing it carefully with a curious eyes before lifting his gaze to mine. In general, it's not bad. However, 1) Lose the profanity. Swearing in direct thought? Completely unnecessary. You just made your character sound about 12. 2) Plausibility over slushy symbolism, please. Of course he's taken it off in the last 4 years. Every time he's had a bath, for a start. It's copper and he's wearing it next to his skin. He'd be green. 3) I'm afraid my reaction to the symbolism of the pendants was "yuck". She's the acorn - a baby - and he's a leaf of the parent tree? Are you sure you want to say that? Why can't they both have leaves and be equals? Why is his gift to her about "protection"? Shouldn't it be about love and partnership? 4) "Said". It's not a dirty word. Go look at a published novel and see just how rarely authors use anything else. You don't use it once. 5) Dialogue. Read it out loud and fix it until it sounds like something you'd say. Nobody says "I almost disregarded the idea completely." I can tell you've worked on this. Really, you just need to back away from your plot a bit and think about what all your characters would do and want and say, not just about how they have to behave to make their romance look "perfect". cathrl69 | Read more |
